Post-Mining Alliance
New landscapes new lives

Our Approach

Local, regional and national governments have often been left with the consequences of poorly planned mine closure. By engaging with the Alliance, governments and their agencies at all levels are encouraged to share expertise in dealing with regeneration issues and are able to engage directly with other stakeholders to develop policy, legislation, guidelines, approaches and new funding mechanisms.

The mining industry is particularly important in resource-rich developing countries; however, these countries often lack the capacity, knowledge and tools to ensure that post-mining regeneration is delivered in ways that best alleviate poverty and ensure environmental integrity. We are particularly interested in building capacity and promoting good practice in these countries.

We provide a brokering role to create opportunities for civil society groups – community-based, conservation, advocacy and capacity-building – to engage more actively in post-mining regeneration activities and to use the Alliance as an independent platform for dialogue and action with industry and government on these issues.

We recognise that there is a strong regional emphasis reflected in the different drivers of current good practice around the world. Nevertheless, many aspects of good practice in closure and regeneration are transferable globally.
